Comic Review: The Old Guard by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández

Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández’s The Old Guard began as a sharp, tightly written comic series before spinning into a multimedia franchise that includes the popular Netflix films. Having come to the comics after watching the first movie—a personal favorite for both me and my wife—I found myself reading them with Charlize Theron’s Andy and the rest of the cinematic team already in mind. That context colored the experience, for better and for worse. The First Series: A Strong Start The opening series of The Old Guard delivers everything you’d hope for in an immortal-mercenary saga: gritty action, complex characters, … Continue reading Comic Review: The Old Guard by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández

Review: Captain America: Brave New World

Was able to catch this one in the theater over the weekend. Enjoyed this one more than I think I was expecting to. Always enjoyed Papa Doc as the Falcon and I liked how they played him as the new Cap without trying to be the old Cap. It was kind of a big theme, and a smart choice. Especially liked the “serum or not to serum” debate. Harrison Ford is starting to look every bit of his age, but that helps here. He is playing a guy who is a career asshole on the wrong side of a lot. … Continue reading Review: Captain America: Brave New World

What Would Be Your Superhero Logo?

Most comic book superheros have a distinguishing logo. Everyone knows the S, the bat, the shield and star. And we know what they represent. Each logo signifies something about the wearer. So, what would be your superhero logo? What symbol would you use to identify who you are to others? I can’t draw. I would struggle to get a straight line on paper if I was spotted the ruler. Luckily, I did not have to draw mine. I stole it from a random online T-shirt and then tweaked it to have a tattoo artist put it on my right shoulder … Continue reading What Would Be Your Superhero Logo?

Review: The Crow (2024)

I’m a Crow fan. No, like, I’m that guy: My license plate was even Crow related. Although in a painful twist, it was The Crow 2, because apparently someone in Illinois beat me to The Crow 1. More on why that hurt a little later. That being said, I’ve have never been a guy clamoring for a remake of The Crow, which came out when I was 13 years old and became a nearly nightly staple of my high school bedtime ritual. When I say I’ve watched it a thousand times, it is not an exaggeration. No wonder I didn’t … Continue reading Review: The Crow (2024)
