With All Due Apologies To Jeff Lahey…

There is a running joke among small town news reporter: want to slow down a city council or village board meeting? Try to buy a mower, truck or tractor. Because everyone in a small town has an opinion, or knows a guy. The debate will take longer than Infrastructure Week. So allow me to channel my inner councilman here a tad. When I bought my house in 2010, it came with a very small yard. It takes about 15 minutes to mow. So, my Pops gave me a free, used mower he had around still. And for nine years, it … Continue reading With All Due Apologies To Jeff Lahey…

College Football Power Ratings Week 8

This week’s IAW Power Ratings have been updated. Ohio St. continues to move closer to Alabama and further ahead of Clemson. Georgia falls to number six after the loss to South Carolina, but not as far behind as it might seem. They had four turnovers in a game they otherwise were the better team in. With the schedule they have, if they win out, they still most likely make the playoffs. Rank Team IAW RTG 1 Alabama 0.3 2 Ohio State 2.3 3 Clemson 4.8 4 LSU 5.9 5 Oklahoma 6.6 6 Georgia 8.2 7 Wisconsin 9.0 8 Penn State … Continue reading College Football Power Ratings Week 8

T Swift And Tiny Desk: Set Your Notions Aside

Most who know me know I am a fan of the Tiny Desk concert series. I have been a subscriber for years now. It has been a great way to see some of my favorite artist in a more intimate live setting. It is also a great way to discover new artist, as I almost never skip an episode. This week NPR had some new girl on there some of ya’ll may nor may not have heard of: Taylor Swift, or T Swift. I think she goes back and forth hoping one catches on. Seems like a sound strategy. I’m … Continue reading T Swift And Tiny Desk: Set Your Notions Aside

Lady Mules Clinch BDC Volleyball Title Outright; Move To 25-1 Overall

The Fairfield Lady Mules volleyball squad entered the 2019 season with a litany of goals they hoped to systematically tick off as they mowed through their schedule. And make no mistake, mow they have. Nestled neatly between “win all our tournaments” and “make a postseason run” was “win conference outright.” The Lady Mules split the BDC-East championship with Edwards County last year, and had not won the title outright since 2009. Had. Because on Monday night, the Lady Mules knocked off Edwards County, 25-14, 25-15, to move to 8-0 in league play with two conference clashes remaining. And with everyone … Continue reading Lady Mules Clinch BDC Volleyball Title Outright; Move To 25-1 Overall

Fairfield senior Maverick Conrad shot a 76 Monday in the West Frankfort Sectional, qualifying for the State Tournament in Bloomington, while junior teammate Noah McElravy missed advancing by one stroke. They were led by Oakley Gee, who became just the second Bulldog to win back-to-back Sectional titles. Gee shot a 66. He finished sixth at state last year as a freshman. McElravy shot a 79 Monday, missing the cut by one stroke at it … Continue reading Conrad Advances To State Golf Tournament

Scoring 26 points in the first quarter, Justin Townsend’s Fairfield Mules won their 27th straight Black Diamond Conference game and clinched their fourth straight BDC title Friday, rolling to a 47-3 win over visiting Edwards County. The 27th straight regular season win in the closed conference gives the Mules a new league record, eclipsing the previous mark of 26 held by Johnston City. At 7-0, they also became the first team to win four straight conference championships since the BDC expanded in 2003. The record of five straight by Johnston City was set in the early 90s. Of their four … Continue reading Mules Clinch Fourth Straight BDC Title; Set Consecutive Wins Record

Lady Mules Clinch Conference Title With Room To Spare

With wins over Johnston City and Hamilton County, the Fairfield Lady Mules have improved to 24-1 overall, and 7-0 in the Black Diamond-East, as Chet Snyder’s volleyball squad continues to roll along in their best start to a season ever. With every other team in the division already with three losses, the Mule gals have already clinched at least a share of the BDC title, which is Fairfield’s eighth in 17 years in the league. One more league win would give them their first outright title since 2009, however. They have been co-champs their last three times, once with Edwards … Continue reading Lady Mules Clinch Conference Title With Room To Spare
