Mules Keep Shutout Streak Alive; Beat Bearcats 42-0

The Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton Bearcats, coached by former NFL star Anthony Hargrove, have been at the bottom of the Black Diamond for several years now. But Hargrove looks to have them moving in the right direction, as they had allowed just 41 points in their first three games. Justin Townsend’s Fairfield Mules put up 42 on them Friday at the Train Yard, while the defense of the home squad kept their shutout streak going with their fourth in a row to start the season. Aired It Out Fairfield, typically a ground-and-pound attack on offense, went to the air 13 times, with junior … Continue reading Mules Keep Shutout Streak Alive; Beat Bearcats 42-0

Instant Classic: Houston-Tulane

There was a beautiful football game to watch last night. No, not the Minshew Mania Bowl, although that can be a different type of fun, because the Minshew Mustache Mafia is going to be a thing if I have anything to do with it. No, the Houston-Tulane game over on ESPN was much more entertaining, despite Houston trucking Tulane early and going up 28-7. I tuned into this one mostly because Houston quarter D’eriq King reminds me of Antwaan Randle El, Indiana’s greatest football player of my time. Tulane had never come back from more than 14 points down in … Continue reading Instant Classic: Houston-Tulane

Mules Lose Tiebreaker To Aces; Playing Without Conrad

The Fairfield Mules golf squad were playing shorthanded at home Tuesday, but still tied the visiting Aces of Mt. Carmel. The away team won the tiebreaker, however, with a better fifth score. The Mules were without senior Maverick Conrad, out with a low back injury. Either Conrad or junior Noah McElravy has led the Mules scoring in every match this year. With Conrad out, McElravy stepped up and took medalist honors, shooting a 36 to win by five strokes. He had bogeys on three and four, but bounced back with birdies on the par-5 seventh hole and the par-4 eighth … Continue reading Mules Lose Tiebreaker To Aces; Playing Without Conrad

College Football Power Ratings Week 4

Here are my power ratings heading into the week four matchups. Ohio State is the big mover among the top 10 so far this year. I have them nearly 3 1/2 points better than my preseason rating. The other top gainer still is Wisconsin, who had moved up to number eight, despite admittedly a week schedule to start the year. That changes this week. Rank Team RTG 1 Alabama 0.0 2 Clemson 1.7 3 Georgia 5.4 4 LSU 7.5 5 Ohio State 7.7 6 Oklahoma 8.6 7 Auburn 12.6 8 Wisconsin 12.7 9 Notre Dame 13.0 10 Texas A&M 14.5 … Continue reading College Football Power Ratings Week 4

Eastern Michigan, Really?

Eight point favorites at home, and they lost to Eastern Michigan. This is such an Illini thing to do. Eight-point road dogs winning are not exactly rare, but this one will almost assuredly shake things up. When I started my new job, I had to go back to using a Windows laptop. That also meant moving on from the far superior Macbook Pro trackpad and going back to a mouse. I haven’t used a mouse since 2012. I also use a glass-top bar for my desk, so I had to borrow a mouse pad from my coworker. I’ve used it … Continue reading Eastern Michigan, Really?

This Week in WTF Box Scores

I scroll through box scores on occasion, looking for the weird and not repeatable. It helps to spot the outliers. One of my bets this week was Michigan State -14 vs Arizona State. They lost in heartbreaking fashion, making a game-thing FG before penalty negated it and then missed the retry. But it never should have been a game. The Spartans nearly doubled up ASU in yardage. They ran 22 more plays. They averaged 1.3 yards more per play. And scored seven points. ASU had a total of two scoring opportunities, and won. This gets an official WTF box score.
