Mules’ Defense Puts BDC On Notice With Shutout Of Devils In Week One

In a rematch of a week nine clash last year to decide the conference championship, the Fairfield Mules opened up the season this year with a defensive display of power Friday night at the Train Yard, shutting out the Sesser-Valier-Waltonville Red Devils, 28-0. The defense held Sesser to four total first downs, and just 85 yards of offense. That included an 0-for-12 showing in the passing game, as the Mules harassed senior Devil quarterback Peyton Bates early and often and kept the league’s top receiver last year, Tanner Eubanks, in check. “I am proud of our defense. Week one, with … Continue reading Mules’ Defense Puts BDC On Notice With Shutout Of Devils In Week One

Townsend’s Mules Have Eyes On Multiple Prizes After 10-1 Season

by Weez Football Fridays in Fairfield have been fun for the Mules in recent years, having won three straight conference championships and riding a 20-game regular-season winning streak. That success even carried over into the playoffs last year, with an overtime win over Newton in the first round. Last year’s seniors graduated with the most wins in a three-year span at FCHS, going from eight to nine to 10 in their varsity career. Entering his 19th year (101-75) as head coach of the Mules, Justin Townsend sounds like a coach who anticipates that success carrying over again this year. This … Continue reading Townsend’s Mules Have Eyes On Multiple Prizes After 10-1 Season

College Football Week 1–Friday Slate

Here are the IAW spreads for Friday’s games in week 1. The pick I like the most on this slate is Wisconsin -10.5 on the road. They should be able to get the lead early enough and then ride Taylor to a double-digit win. They return a ton, except for up front on offense, but the Badgers tend to be a reload team at o-line, not a rebuild one. That Utah St-Wake Forest game has some interest, as Utah St has one of the better non-Power 5 quarterbacks in Jordan Love, who NFL teams are high on. Problem is, he … Continue reading College Football Week 1–Friday Slate

Conrad Ties For Medalist In Olney Golf Quad

Competing in Olney Wednesday, Coach Brent Sutton’s Fairfield Mules finished third as a team in the four-team match, while senior Maverick Conrad finished in a three-way tie for low score on the day. Conrad tied Charleston’s Taylor Drake and Richland County’s Mitchell Tolliver with a 39. Drake hit a triple bogey on the first hole, but shot pars on seven of the eight other holes. Conrad avoided any disastrous holes, shooting bogeys on holes three, four, six and eight, with pars on the other five holes. Richland County won the meet with a team score of 165, with Charleston in … Continue reading Conrad Ties For Medalist In Olney Golf Quad

Tigers Sweep Cross Country Opener In Fairfield

The Fairfield Mules hosted the Tom Wickham Invitational Tuesday afternoon, changing locations for the annual invitational this year. The Richland County Tigers were just fine with that, as they took both individual and team titles on the day. After running for the past couple of decades at Leo French Park, the Mules moved the meet to Southwest Park, meaning the winners of each race would have new course records. In the girls’ race, the Tigers’ Tatum David won by nearly three minutes, finishing the course in 17 minutes, 46 seconds. Hamilton County’s Maddie Karcher was second at 20:33. Richland County … Continue reading Tigers Sweep Cross Country Opener In Fairfield

Smoked Brats, Ribeyes

Fired up the smoker tonight to cook some homemade brats and went ahead and cooked a couple ribeyes as well. Brats will be for later in the week, as the ribeyes were for tonight. Smoked the steak to 130, and then finished them off by searing them in bacon grease in the cast iron. I’m normally a simple S&P man for my steaks, but went a little different for these, using a grill rub from a chocolate place in St. Louis. Finished it all off with corn on the cob, mashed cauliflower and a glass of whiskey from a bottle … Continue reading Smoked Brats, Ribeyes

Mules Golf Wins Quad Match On Tiebreaker

The Fairfield Mules won a four-team match in McLeansboro Monday, nipping the host Hamilton County Foxes on a tiebreaker. The top four for each squad combined for a 177 team score, but the Mules had five golfers shoot 50 or below to win the tiebreaker by five strokes. The Mt. Carmel Aces finished third with 179 strokes and Christ Our Rock Lutheran was fourth with 211. Fairfield’s Noah McElravy was medalist on the day, shooting a 40. Fairfield Mule Maverick Conrad and Hamilton County Fox Sammy Benbrook both shot 42s. Foxes Laban Hunt and Gavin Ingram and Mt. Carmel’s Jett … Continue reading Mules Golf Wins Quad Match On Tiebreaker
