So…about that fitness plan: What I've been up to this year.

A few months ago, I posted my fitness intentions on this blog. I started walking regularly, and working out again. And then I got derailed by a six-week gout flareup. My activity level was damn near negligible for a while. However, I set down in late December and formulated a new plan, finally feeling healthy again. I didn’t post about it then, but by and large, my plan has been working for me. I’ve dropped a little weight, I’m sleeping much better and I’m moving easier too. I still have a long way to go, but there has finally been … Continue reading So…about that fitness plan: What I've been up to this year.

Louisiana Derby Bets

With the sports world coming to a halt last week, so did my sports gambling, obviously. I have yet to dive into Russian basketball, but the withdrawals may be kicking in soon. Luckily, there is some horse racing to tide me over. The Louisiana Derby is in a few hours, running at Fair Grounds. The race has a new distance this year, moving to 1 3/16 miles, matching the Preakness distance. Of the 14 horses, eight are locals, as well as a son of American Pharoah. The Odds Favorite Of the 14, Enforceable enters as the favorite in the morning … Continue reading Louisiana Derby Bets

College Basketball Power Rankings

It’s college basketball tournament time, with the conference tournaments underway, and March Madness right around the corner. I will not be making my annual trek to Vegas this year, as I have a Boston work trip next week. And Illinois did not get anyone with mobile betting up just yet, which means if I want to make any legal wagers, I’m driving to Indiana again. Still, I finally got a chance to sit down and work on some power rankings. I have a top 64 for now. I will sit down next weekend and power rate each NCAA Tournament team, … Continue reading College Basketball Power Rankings

Football Season Is Over, Long Live Football Season (An XFL Primer)

The NFL season ended Sunday with the Chiefs win over San Francisco, but thanks to the stubbornness of Vince McMahon, football season is nigh. Nigh, I say, as the XFL reboot is set to begin this weekend. There are just enough known names from my dynasty football consumption and just enough rules differences, most of which are a step in the direction I would like to take football, to make the league interesting. Plus, you know, the whole St. Louis Battlehawks thing. Yay Local Team! Eight Teams The XFL will feature eight teams in two divisions. The East: St. Louis … Continue reading Football Season Is Over, Long Live Football Season (An XFL Primer)

Super Bowl Day

The Super Bowl is an unofficial holiday in the Weez household. Food, drink, friends. I still think the day after the Super Bowl should be a federal holiday. As should Election Day, but that is a whole other topic of discussion. My Super Bowl day started at 3:45 a.m., firing up the smoker for 16 pounds of pulled pork. We have a KC sweet and smokey sauce to add if the guest would lime. Take note: pulled pork is a meat, not a soup. Add the sauce after. There will also be SF sourdough grilled cheeses, completing the balance. I … Continue reading Super Bowl Day

“I Guess The Party Ended”–Robert Earl Keen Walks The Floor

Chris Shiflett was a pleasant surprise for me a couple years ago. Not in a “who is this guy”. He plays in Foo Fighters, one of the biggest bands in the world, after all. No, the surprise was “this guy is legit in the Americana world” way. Chris has a podcast called Walking The Floor, borrowing from Earnest Tubbs. He has awesome guest on a regular basis, a regular Who’s Who of the music world I tend to make my’s ears’ habitat. This was was no exception (the correct use, Darrelle Revis), with the venerable Robert Earl Keene joining Chris … Continue reading “I Guess The Party Ended”–Robert Earl Keen Walks The Floor
