St. Louis Mighty Con

The St. Louis Comic Con (Mighty Con) was held this weekend in the Collinsville Convention Center and I was able to attend the Saturday session. This was just my third comic convention ever (all within the last year) and the largest. The previous two were in Benton and Harrisburg.

The main attraction for me for this one guest-wise was the duo of Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson, or Dante and Randal from Clerks fame. I actually rewatched the first Clerks Friday night to “prepare” for meeting them both Saturday. I still need to watch the third one. I’m not sure why I never got around to it. If you don’t understand their relevance within pop culture, then you are probably as blind as Anne Frank.

I was able to meet and greet with both, getting a combo picture and signed poster. I didn’t have the heart to tell Brian I was number 36 at any point.

Cool dudes. Money well spent. Brian and Jeff once had the pleasure…

Jeff really appreciated my shirt, which has become my de facto Con shirt. Several asked for pictures of the shirt (but not me, ahem). I actually got stopped for a picture before I even made it into the line to get in.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan was there, but I never got in his line. I was surprised by how much smaller he is these days. The other guests were all relatively unknown to me. I missed the Power Ranger era, so those guests did not jump out at me, and a quick check of my CLZ app told me I did not own anything from the comic artists who were there.

Still, I’ve have gotten in the habit of grabbing prints from some of the artists there. I got three from one guy (for a whopping $20 total).

I’m always a sucker for The Crow prints. I would have bought the original metal print of the Turtles but he did not want to sell it on day one of a two-day show. It was sharp.

My only other non-comic purchase was a Biggie Funko. This makes three Biggies I now own, outnumbering the two ‘Pacs I own. I feel like throwing up the Westside with the Clerks duo above helps even things out.

As for the comics, my biggest purchase was some more hip hop variants. Got six more of those in one day. I added in some more Deadpool, including all four issues of Vol. 1 (reader copy set for $20). The same guy had a 9.8 #1, but I did not pull the trigger. And I continue to work on my Alpha Flight Vol. 1 set. Add in some more Alex Ross, the first Highlander comic appearance and some Kevin Smith Batman trade paperbacks and I’ll call it a good day.

And I was able to snag one of the Mighty Con edition posters to boot.

Venue was a little cramped, but I never knocked anything over trying to get around people, so I’ll call that a win. There were definitely more Funko dealers than comics, which takes up quite a bit of room. I have gotten more stingy with my Funko collecting however. I simply ran out of room, something pretty common amongst “in box” collectors. Still, this was a Con I would look to attend again in the future.
