Lady Mules Volleyball vs. Newton, 9-5-23

Lady Mules Clip Eagles Wings, Win 13th Straight To Start Season

Despite having played in the same two tournaments in the first three weeks of the season, Fairfield and Newton never ran into each other. They did so in regular season action Tuesday at the Mule Barn, with Chet Shyder’s Lady Mules fighting off a feisty Lady Eagle team, 25-22, 25-19.

Newton led much of the first set, and as late at 20-18, but Fairfield was able to string together a late run for the win. That surge started with Newton’s third missed serve of the set, and included four kills from senior terminator Emersyn Robbins.

Robbins got off to a slow start on offense, not scoring her first kill in the front row until Fairfield’s 13th point of the night. She would go on to finish with 16 kills on the night, however.

After the struggles of the first set, Fairfield took control of the second set early, scoring seven in a row for a 10-3 lead. Newton showed their grit with a six-point rally to get back within one at 11-10, but they never could take a lead.

Fairfield went up six at 17-11, then traded points to the finale. Newton again struggled with their serve, missing four in the second set. Fairfield missed two serves in the match.

Fairfield finished with 23 kills as a team, with a 27.4 kill percentage and a .132 hitting percentage. Newton had 19, with 25.7 and .054 respectively.

Libero Mabry Ellis led the defense with 19 digs, while Rylee Edwards had 12. Edwards also led the team with 14 assists.

Fairfield improved to 13-0 with the win.
