Lady Mules Stay Unbeaten In Conference Play With Home Win
By all accounts from the Fairfield Lady Mules volleyball faithful, they did not play up to their standards Thursday in a home clash with the Hamilton County Lady Foxes.
Yet, in a sign of the heights they have achieved as a team this year, they had an “off night” and still rolled to a 25-18, 25-16 win over a conference rival that came in with a 17-7 record.
The win was the ninth straight for Chet Snyder’s squad, who improved to 7-0 in league play and 24-2 overall.
The Lady Mules had seven attack errors and four missed serves in the game, but still had plenty of offensive firepower, despite a slow start.
The Foxes led the majority of the first set, as Fairfield did not take their first lead until going up 16-15. Fairfield finished the match on an 11-3 run to seal the win. Perhaps more importantly for future developments, the run came with Emersyn Robbins in the back row, as four other players combined for five kills in that spurt.
Hamilton County led in the second set as well, but not nearly as late. They went up 3-2 before Fairfield was able to follow with a 14-4 run to take control.
Robbins finished with 17 kills to lead the offense, including 10 in the first set. She also had Fairfield’s lone ace. It was the 25th time in her career Robbins has had 17 kills or more. The school record before she came along was 17.
Fairfield will host Edwards County tonight (Monday) for the annual Pink Out game. The Lions are 16-10. Fairfield is at Eldorado Tuesday and then will host the 19-2 Carmi Lady Bulldogs, looking to lock up the conference championship if they win out.
