Here are this week’s five songs worth listening to. Tailgate edition.
The Fairfield Mules’ first home game is tonight. Tomorrow, I’ll be tailgating and attending the UofI football game against UTSA.
So, it is time for what is becoming an annual tradition for me here: reminding ya’ll of my Mules Tailgate playlist over on Spotify. Also a reminder that I sort my friends by those who have Spotify Premium and those who do not. I slowly add to it, both with new stuff and some older ones that I feel like adding. I believe in letting lists grow organically. So, this week’s Fab Five Friday is a few additions made to my Mules Tailgate list in the last year.
Ida Mae and Marcus King–Click Click Domino
I listen to a lot of sad, sappy stuff. Sad songs, they make me happy, as BJ Barham says. But they don’t have much of a place in a tailgate playlist, meant for crowds and good times. It is mostly rock anthems, songs of glory or amp up fight music. Click Click Domino is the first kind. With shades of White Stripes to it, this one thumps.
Morgan Wade–Wilder Days
Tailgates are often about nostalgia too. For those who are my age, it is reconnecting with school friends, reminiscing, etc. Wilder Days is a different take on nostalgia, but nostalgia all the same. Plus, my wife is currently in love with Morgan Wade and she listens to this list even more than I do. I know where my bread is buttered.
Jimi Hendrix–Hear My Train a Comin’
It’s a Mules playlist. We have to have some train songs for the Train Yard, right?
Fat Rat–Warbringer
This is fight music for nerds. Fat Rat is known for video game scores. Add in some pounding percussion and Lindsey Stirling doing Lindsey Stirling things on the violin and you have a fight anthem. This is the classical score that will have you ready to charge into battle.
Out of fear, we kept running
Trying to hide away
Can you hear?
War is coming.
Beckoning our fate
This is the day we stand up
This is the day we fight
We’ll take our place, we won’t give in
Our victory is in sight
Only a sword in our hand but
We enter the lion’s den
We’re not waiting for a war
We bring the war to them
We bring the war to them
T-Powell–Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose
THE Friday night hype song of the decade. Texas forever.
We’ll be back with five more next week. Until then, remember the immortal words…
“Songs are really just interesting things to be doing with the air.” Tom Waits
