Kaizen: April 13-19, 2020

When I started my new training log book, I called it Ton of Fun, because one of my goals was a six-lift (squat, bench, clean, deadlift, press, snatch) of 2,000 pounds. When I started this latest journey, it was 1285. When you consider I have totalled more than 1,500 in a three-lift powerlift (squat, bench, deadlift), you start to understand some of the life choices I have made over the years.

However, this week, I just changed the name to Kaizen, japanese for the concept of continuous improvement. It’s nothing original in the fitness world to adapt this word. Katrin Davidsdottir talks about it in her book. It is the new Sisu. Still, I’m adopting it, for a while at least. If anyone is actually following this stuff (I doubt it, at least not closely), the improvement is microscopic. But even the miniscule adds up over time, with consistency. I like the old quote from Zen monk Shunryu Suzuki, “Each of you is perfect the way you are … and you can use a little improvement.”

This week, I have added some short jogs into the program. Even at this short distance, these beat up my joints pretty good. We will see how this goes going forward. Also, I have added a seperate body weight circuit to rotate with the original. The new circuit contains more difficult movements in the five

So, here is to a little improvement.
